Digital books are electronic versions of print books that exist only as electronic files. Some digital books are designed to be listened to (downloadable audio books) and others are created for on-screen reading (eBooks) on your computer monitor or some other devise. They offer the convenience of 24/7 Internet access, searchable text, and adjustable type size. They require very little staff time, no storage, and perhaps best of all - they can’t be stolen! There are several models for libraries to purchase or subscribe to digital books. Some of the models may combine with others:
- Shared Collections
Multiple pre-selected titles shared by several libraries.
- Individual Collections
Titles selected by an institution for their patron use only.
- Static Collections
A collection that does not vary content.
- Growing Collections
Titles may be added or deleted from the collection.
- Subscription Model
Titles are accessible with an annual subscription fee.
- Purchase Model
Titles are purchased and owned by the library or group of libraries. An annual maintenance or hosting fee may be charged.
