PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Books, Lives and Videotape: A Michigan eLibrary Readers' Advisory Presentation by NoveList's Duncan Smith

Get a new take on working with fiction readers by participating in this program led by NoveList creator and product manager Duncan Smith. Using videotapes of readers talking about books they have read and enjoyed, Duncan provides a reader-centered approach to meeting the needs of your fiction readers. Integrating resources such as NoveList into the readers' advisory process will also be covered as part of this presentation.  NoveList is provided to by the Michigan eLibrary (MeL).

This program is the perfect way for you to learn how to make the best use of NoveList in working with your library’s fiction readers. The following common scenarios will be addressed:

*Helping readers who are reading books you haven’t read.
*Finding books in a series in reading order.
*Locating books for readers when they can’t remember the author (or the title).
*Finding reading suggestions for readers who like a particular genre or plot.

Database training:

Contact MLC staff for more information.

Hands-on training in the Michigan eLibrary (MeL) Databases is available for library staff in the state of Michigan free of charge. Classes are offered in locations throughout the state. Host libraries simply need to provide a computer lab with Internet connection for each participant and a projector for the instructor's station. Minimum class size is 8; maximum class size is 20. Libraries may combine staff to schedule classes.

Participants in these classes receive a certificate of completion.

To schedule a class to be taught in your library, REMC, or Cooperative, please contact MLC.

MeL is a project of the Library of Michigan, an agency of the state government. The Library of Michigan contracts with MLC and partners with a number of Michigan organizations and institutions to provide MeL services.

This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan.
